Jef and I were at Point Reyes last week and found these guys on a beach that's not part of the normal rookery so we managed to get pretty close. We were so close we could see they had runny noses! I could even hear the little one snoring although he stopped before I started recording. Here's the video.

Rattlesnake Wrestling [May. 31st, 2006|12:03 am]

Rattlesnakes

Have I mentioned that I have a video blog? I set up Walking On Air Video as a place to put some of the video clips I generate when I'm hiking. I don't post there much but I have a couple of recent posts.

The first is this one of two rattlesnakes I found at Windy Point Open Space Preserve. They were twined around each other and it was like arm wrestling except the arms weren't attached to anything. Apparently its pretty rare to catch this behavior on video.

Here's the video I made from the movie clips I took of the Merced with my new camera while I was at Yosemite a couple weeks ago. Remixable recordings are a good thing. Too bad there aren't more of them.

Big Oak Flat, California, home of the world famous Tie Dye Jerky. This is on highway 120 on the way to Yosemite. I'd like to think they sell some kind of hippie rainbow meat, but probably not.

Burning Boing Boing [Apr. 22nd, 2005|10:50 am]

[Current Music |Weird Science - Oingo Boingo]

I just set up a new SmartCast feed for boingboing. Feedburner munges boingboing's normal RSS feed and adds enclosures to items which link to audio or video. Add this feed to a media aware RSS reader like ANT or iPodder for boingboing recommended stuff to magically appear on your computer in a tivolike fashion.

White you're at it, check out Rocketboom and Walking On Air Video. Rocketboom is a kind of Daily Show for bloggers and Walking On Air is a blog I set up as a home for my elephant seal video. I've posted a couple so far and will add more some day.

[info]jwz's recent post about his collage hack had a link from [info]jaykayess to one his automatic collages. I liked it so much I tried doing one myself. Here's a link to my post in the flickr Technique group on how I did it.

Next time you're at the corner café, leeching free wireless
internet, sipping on a urine sample cup sized cup of coffee swill, go
watch Neurotially Yours. My favorites are Small, Medium, Large and Fatkins Diet. The rants are pretty good too. Do it or incur Foamy's Squirrelly Wrath.

[Current Music |Bang Bang - Sister Machine Gun]

To welcome [info]fgmr to livejournal I thought I'd post some more old-fashioned high-tech. This time, from the USS Pampanito, a World War II era diesel submarine which is now a museum at Pier 45 in San Francisco. Unfortunately, the pics of the crypto machine came out all blurry. It was on the far side of a dark room behind plexiglas. At that distance it just looked like a typewriter anyway.

Make it stop, make it stop [Dec. 23rd, 2004|10:31 am]
[Current Music |Waiting - High Blue Star]

Next time when I wake up to put the finishing touches on my year-end slideshow extravaganza and I'm racing around to leave for the airport in a couple hours, I will make sure that one of those finishing touches is not to add dissolve transitions to all two dozen slideshows. Its been two hours and iDVD is still rendering transitions.

It says "Estimated time to completion: 10 minutes after you leave for the airport".

jwz's recommendations [Dec. 7th, 2004|05:58 pm]
[Tags|]
[Current Music |Big Bad City - St. Vitus Dance]

All you iTunes Music Store using, DNA Lounge inhabitanting, jwz fanboys and girls should go rate this playlist at iTMS (link only works if you have itunes installed). The songs in the playlist are songs from jwz's three music recommendation gruntles from 2002, 2002 (part 2) and 2003 plus maybe a song or two that he's mentioned in livejournal. You don't have to buy anything, just rate the playlist. The more people who vote for it, the more likely iTMS users will see it and maybe this will help promote some of the indie bands on the list in some infinitesimal way. Yes, there's a lot missing but the list can only have stuff the store sells. I'm surprised it has this much.
UPDATE: Here's the playlist for the iTMS impaired. I copied this from the mail they sent when I recently updated the list. Too bad they don't list the album too.

Why are they named after shoes? [Dec. 6th, 2004|08:15 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

I visited the Nike missile site in Marin yesterday and took lots of pictures of assorted 1950's high tech gadgets, blinkenlights, an analog computer and things that make mushroom clouds in the night. Supply your own Strangelove quote.

It was actually a very interesting place. The site is owned by the National Park Service but a lot of the work and funding at the museum is provided by volunteers. Docents are mostly Army vets who worked on Nike missiles so they know what they're talking about and are pretty interesting to talk with.

You Better Piss Elsewhere! [Nov. 24th, 2004|02:01 am]

Art Isn't Easy [Nov. 24th, 2004|12:37 am]
[Tags|, , ]

The art installation at the Adobe Bookshop right now is the store itself. The shelves are still labeled by subject, but the books are arranged by color, like a rainbow. Surprisingly, this turns out to be a pretty cool way to shop. If you're there to look for a specific book, then you're probably SOL. But if you're just there to browse then having the books be in random order makes you see books and make associations that you never would have noticed before.

The show ends Dec 12 but it would be cool if the store stayed like this. (not that I ever shop there)

Adobe Bookshop is on 16th between Tokyo Go Go and Ti Couz, near [info]dmose. More at SFGate and NPR.

Free To A Good Home [Nov. 19th, 2004|12:44 am]
[Current Music |One Day We Will Be Free - Nina Hagen]

Getting new carpeting meant I had to pack everything in boxes and put it in the dining room to age. In the process of unpacking I noticed I have duplicates of a bunch of stuff. Let me know if you want something.

DVD
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense

Casablanca (This is from the welcome package we got from Time/Warner after the merger. Not to be picky, but I would have preferred options that didn't dive to the bottom of the Marianas trench. The best part of the package was the discount subscription to Mad Magazine. The best part of the separation package was the CD with a thousand free hours of AOL.)

CD
Railer - Frame of Mind (I was so excited to find this in the dollar bin at Amoeba that I forgot I already have one)

Books
Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets
Engines of Creation - K. Eric Drexler
Yosemite National Park - Jeffrey P. Schaffer Second Edition, revised 3rd printing 1987. This is a couple of editions out of date and the topo map is missing.

I also have several pounds of O'Reilly xlib and xview books that someone could probably talk me out of.
