Jef and I were at Point Reyes last week and found these guys on a beach that's not part of the normal rookery so we managed to get pretty close. We were so close we could see they had runny noses! I could even hear the little one snoring although he stopped before I started recording. Here's the video.

Aren't they just like big, overgrown sausages? ;) That's actually the beach where we release many of our seals. I couldn't see any on the video, but if you saw orange tail tags on any of the animals, that means they were once patients at the Marine Mammal Center.

Yes! they sure are goofy looking. The adult males seem like locomotive sized earthworms. Or maybe sand worms in Dune. Wish i could make it to the zoo today. Hope it all goes well. I still haven't been to the MMC. Jef and I should ride over there and visit you. Maybe next month.

The only tail tag I saw was white. I'll keep an eye out orange ones though. Any idea if babies released here will return to this rookery to haul out or go back to the one where they were born?

I was kind of concerned about the baby near the fence. He was inside the fence near the picnic table and i wondered if he'd remember how to get back out or be able to with a coyote or dog pestering him.

I think the guy inside the fence should be fine. Even if he had trouble finding his way out, the rangers know to keep an eye on the seals there, and they can help him back to the beach.

The seals don't return to their birth site to haul out, they'll just look for a quiet beach. I don't know whether they return to their birth site when they are ready to mate and/or give birth themselves.
